If you have been sitting in the Express Entry pool waiting for a French-language round, this week was both good news and a warning. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada finally ran another French draw on October 16 — its first in eight weeks — and handed out 5,000 invitations. The catch? The cut-off jumped to a CRS score of 435, the highest a French draw has set all year.

Draw 450: the numbers IRCC actually published

Here is what the official record shows. Round number 450, held October 16, 2026 at 10:25:13 UTC, targeted the French-Language proficiency category. IRCC issued 5,000 invitations to apply, and the lowest-ranked candidate invited held a Comprehensive Ranking System score of 435. The tie-breaking rule was October 6, 2026 at 21:31:22 UTC — meaning anyone at exactly 435 who entered the pool after that timestamp missed out.

This was the 11th French-language draw of 2026 and the 62nd Express Entry draw overall this year. With it, IRCC has now invited 143,467 candidates to apply for permanent residence in 2026, and French-category invitations total 55,500 — the second-largest single source of invitations behind the Canadian Experience Class.

Why 435? The eight-week gap did the damage

The number that matters here is not 435 itself — it is the 53-point jump from the last French draw. On August 19, IRCC ran the same 5,000-invitation round and the cut-off was just 382. Before that, the year's high was 420 on July 9, which itself followed a six-week gap.

See the pattern? French draws ran roughly every two weeks through July, then went silent for nearly two months. In that window, French-speaking candidates kept entering the pool and kept polishing their scores. When IRCC finally opened the tap again with the same 5,000 invitations, a much bigger crowd was elbowing for the same number of spots. Moving2Canada's analysis puts it plainly: the longer wait meant more competition per invitation, and the cut-off climbed 15 points past the previous 2026 high.

It was also a busy week in the pool generally. Two days earlier, on October 13, IRCC ran a Provincial Nominee draw — 752 invitations at a CRS of 772. On October 15, a Canadian Experience Class round issued 2,500 invitations at 519. The three draws combined put 8,252 new ITAs into play in four days.

Who qualified — and who should worry

French draws are category-based selection, so this round only touched candidates with at least NCLC 7 — the Canadian benchmark for French — in all four abilities: speaking, listening, reading and writing. You also needed an active Express Entry profile under the Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class or Federal Skilled Trades programs. Meeting the French threshold alone never guaranteed an invitation; IRCC simply ranked everyone who met it and took the top 5,000.

The broader message is worth absorbing. Ottawa has made Francophone immigration outside Quebec an explicit policy target — 9 percent of admissions in 2026, rising to 9.5 percent in 2027, 10.5 percent in 2028, and 12 percent by 2029. Category-based draws are the main tool for hitting it. French ability remains one of the strongest levers a candidate has — this year's French cut-offs have still run far below the 519 demanded in general CEC rounds — but it is not the near-certainty it looked like when the cut-off was 382 in August. Candidates who assumed low scores would last indefinitely just got a 53-point correction.

And a heads-up if you hold a job offer: separate Express Entry changes take effect November 3 — high-wage jobs earn extra CRS points and the LMIA requirement disappears for qualifying offers, which we covered on this site this week. Update your profile before that date; IRCC will recalculate scores and pause invitations briefly during the switch.
