Nearly 300 Canadian business leaders are in India this week — and two of the country's most senior ministers have followed them. Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu landed in Mumbai on Monday at the head of Canada's largest trade mission to India in more than 30 years, while Foreign Minister Anita Anand began a parallel four-day visit to New Delhi and the UAE — a full-court push as Ottawa races to conclude an India trade deal by December.

The Team Canada Trade Mission to India, running October 12 to 17 with stops in Mumbai and Bengaluru, was announced by Global Affairs Canada on October 9. It is the largest commercial engagement Canada has sent to India in recent years, per the official statement — the clearest signal yet that the post-2023 rebuild is being measured in trade deals, not handshakes.

According to Global Affairs Canada, the nearly 300 delegates will "connect with Indian decision makers, key industry players and potential clients to expand commercial relations and build new partnerships that create good-paying jobs at home." The mission covers aerospace, clean technology, information and communication technologies, life sciences and agri-food, with forestry and wood products also a priority sector, per IANS.

"This is how we will more than double our trade with India to $70 billion by 2030," Sidhu said in the government statement. As The Hindu BusinessLine reported, the programme includes business-to-business meetings, site visits and briefings by Canadian trade commissioners — and both governments are aiming to finalize the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's expected visit to Canada in December.

The mission follows the fifth round of Canada-India CEPA negotiations, held in Ottawa from October 5 to 9, as reported by PTI. Neither government has released an outcome, but The Hindu BusinessLine reported further rounds are expected in November, with New Delhi saying it has made its best offer and is awaiting Ottawa's response.

The numbers explain the urgency. Two-way bilateral trade reached $30.4 billion in 2025, per Canadian government figures cited by The Economic Times — $3.9 billion in Canadian merchandise exports against $9.7 billion in imports from India. Doubling that to $70 billion by 2030 would make India one of Canada's most important commercial partners outside North America, and it fits Ottawa's strategy of diversifying trade away from the United States amid the Trump trade war.

Anita Anand India visit: Jaishankar talks, then the UAE

On Monday, Global Affairs Canada confirmed that Anand will travel to India and the UAE from October 13 to 16, meeting External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on trade, energy, people-to-people ties and security and defence cooperation. It will be the 11th meeting between the two ministers since September 2025 — a pace that shows how fast the relationship has been rebuilt since the 2023 diplomatic rupture, which India denied. As Asia Samachar reported, the thaw gathered momentum under Prime Minister Mark Carney, with both countries restoring high commissioners.

In New Delhi, Anand will also join a panel at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum. The Indian Express reported there is a "strong possibility" both Canadian ministers will meet Prime Minister Modi — and that Delhi is considering inviting Prime Minister Carney as chief guest for India's Republic Day in January 2027.

Why the Canada-India trade push matters

If the CEPA lands alongside Modi's expected Canada visit in December, it would be the biggest Canada-India milestone since 2023 — and one of the Carney government's signature trade wins. Either way, this week marks the moment Ottawa put its full weight behind the bet that Canada's economic future runs through New Delhi as much as Washington.
