Record $90M Lotto Max Jackpot Won: Calgary-Area Group Takes Canada's Biggest-Ever Lottery Prize
Somewhere in Alberta right now β maybe at a kitchen table, maybe at a work site β there's a group of people sitting on the biggest lottery win in Canadian history. A group from the Calgary area has won the record $90-million Lotto Max jackpot from Tuesday's draw, according to the Calgary Herald, turning a regular week into the kind of story people will be retelling for years.
CTV News confirmed the win on Wednesday: the lucky ticket, purchased somewhere outside Edmonton and Calgary according to the Western Canada Lottery Corporation, matched all seven numbers in the October 20 draw. It is the first time the $90-million jackpot β the largest lottery prize ever offered in Canada β has actually been claimed.
The numbers, if you haven't checked yours
The winning numbers for Tuesday's draw were 8, 15, 19, 23, 26, 28 and 34, with a bonus of 38, according to lottery results published after the draw. The draw also produced three tickets worth $205,767 each β matching six of seven numbers plus the bonus β sold in Alberta, Ontario and British Columbia.
The jackpot had been sitting at the $90-million cap since mid-October. Nobody won it in the Friday, October 16 draw, when the prize pool still totalled about $119 million across the jackpot, Maxmillions and Maxplus tiers. Under the game's rules, once the main prize hits the cap, the overflow goes into more million-dollar side prizes β which is why Tuesday's draw also scattered several $1-million Maxmillions wins across the country, including tickets in Brant County and Toronto purchased through OLG.ca.
Why this one is historic
This didn't happen by accident β the game was literally redesigned to get here. In April 2026, the OLG raised the Lotto Max jackpot cap from $80 million to $90 million, creating the possibility of a nine-figure night. The previous Canadian record stood at $85 million. Tuesday's win is the first time anyone has actually banked the new maximum.
It also arrives at an oddly fitting moment. With inflation running hot β gas prices up nearly 28 per cent in September, according to Statistics Canada β a $90-million cheque lands differently than it might have a few years ago. For a group from the Calgary area to split it, as the Herald reported, makes it a very Alberta story: neighbours or coworkers or family members, suddenly very rich together, which is either the best or the most complicated thing that can happen to a friend group.
The odds of actually hitting that combination, for the record, were 1 in 33,294,800 β the same long shot as ever, which is exactly why the number on the cheque matters so much. Ninety million dollars is not "never work again" money; it's "buy the building you work in" money. For a group splitting it, the math still works out to life-changing per person, even after the financial planners and the accountants get their cut of the conversation.

Here's the unglamorous part the winners are about to learn: claiming a prize this size isn't a trip to the corner store. Winnings of this magnitude go through formal verification with the lottery corporation, and winners have up to a year to come forward. The WCLC hasn't named the group or said exactly where the ticket was purchased β just that it was sold outside the two big Alberta cities, which means half the province is probably checking its wallet right now.
And for everyone else? The jackpot resets for Friday's draw. The dream starts again at a much smaller number β but after Tuesday, Canadians know the $90 million is real. Someone, somewhere near Calgary, is proof.
